Land God Temple
2015
90x100x60 cm
Canvas, blowing machine, wood, sensor, program controller
Given that Taiwanese folk religion is the anticipated development, then temples, where gods reside, should be the materialization of such spiritual faith. An old temple condenses the expectation raised by the noise reduction of time, with every piece of it awakening the sense of time.
Tudigong (Land God) ranks relatively low in the divine hierarchy in Taiwanese folk religion, and yet is the most closely connected with them. Such belief has its root in people’s gratitude and respect for land and the earth. This piece of work, a temple-shaped balloon made of blue-and-white canvas, which is commonly seen in Taiwan’s constructions, inflates and deflates through a built-in sensor. It is designed to highlight local people’s shift in attitudes toward traditional beliefs and the observation of a weakening bond between people.
